2012 IEEE High Performance
Extreme Computing Conference
(HPEC ‘12)
Sixteenth Annual HPEC Conference
10 - 12 September 2012
Westin Hotel, Waltham, MA USA
In this BoF, we will discuss the range of energy-efficiency solutions that are appearing with increased frequency in the
Datacenter, with an eye towards embedded, extreme, and out-of-spec technologies. The dialogue will encompass supply-
response and load following capabilities like dynamic frequency throttling with DVFS or kernel space utilities, and modern
outboard hardware like UPSes and PDUs that support interactive control.
This will include a survey of contemporary best practices, and architecture-agnostic algorithms and guidelines. We will also
discuss what EE lessons, both good and bad, can be learned from the general (non-scientific) HPC community, including high-
frequency stock trading firm hardware requirements. Post-presentations discussion and debate is encouraged.
